My craft was born out of my love for cooking and my profession as a Registered Dietitian. From the time I was a child growing up in central Europe to now living on the West Coast of Canada, growing our own food and cooking from scratch has always been a part of my life. Now together with my husband we have created a large garden full of fruit trees, berry bushes and vegetables, creating our own mini urban farm here in Burnaby, BC.
When our young fruit trees had finally grown enough to yield fruit, we were disappointed that the flowers were not being pollinated. This is when our adventures in beekeeping started. My husband, a Registered Nurse, started beekeeping as a relaxing and a fun hobby. Together we have watched our garden thrive, our children enjoy fresh fruits, berries, and vegetables from our garden and we reduced our ecological footprint by eating what we grow.
After 8 years of enjoying our own honey and experimenting with beeswax, I started making hand cream and lotion for our family’s use. As a Registered Dietitian, I always believed that “you are what you eat” and focused on wholesome ingredients and home cooking. It was a very natural next step for me to want to create and use products on our skin using the natural ingredients we had harvested. After some research, I realized I can handcraft some basic lotions and creams and added honey and beeswax knowing they are amazing ingredients in skincare. After much experimentation I made gifts containing my creams and lip balms for Christmas of 2016. After trying my creations people encouraged me to put our products on the market.
Healing Bees was born out of this encouragement in 2017 and it is now a true family endeavour. Our kids help with honey extraction, labeling, and packaging. My husband is the beekeeper and with organic beekeeping practices brings the honey and beeswax to the table. My brother and sister-in-law do all the design, art work, and photography for our website and labels. My mother, who is a chemist, helps with ideas and trouble shooting when it comes to experimenting with new recipes. I use my cooking knowledge and analytical skills to make our products. Careful measurements, recipe creation, and knowledge of chemistry is needed to make new products. I also use my Food Safety and HACCP standards knowledge in making sure our products are safe for the consumer.
Together we have created a whole line of Healing Bees products that we hope you will love and enjoy as much as we do!
